Toronto 2015 Bid Plans Friendliest, Safest Pan / Parapan American Games

TORONTO, ONTARIO, October 21, 2009 – The Toronto 2015 Pan / Parapan American Games bid plans for a friendly and welcoming event that will make a secure, enjoyable and worry-free experience for athletes and visitors alike.

“Ensuring athletes and spectators experience an exceptional Games is essential,” says Jagoda Pike, President and COO, Toronto 2015.  “Our safety and security plan is extensive and benefits from excellent resources as well as Toronto’s world-famous reputation as one of the most livable cities in the world.”

The Mercer 2008 Cost of Living survey points to Toronto as the “best” city for personal safety in the Western Hemisphere and The Economist magazine ranked Toronto the fourth “most livable” city in the world in 2009. Security for the 2015 Games would be planned and implemented by the Integrated Security Unit (ISU), an integrated team led by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) involving all levels of policing and all jurisdictions participating in the Games. The goal of the security operations will be to ensure that the Games are safe and compliment the experience for athletes, officials and spectators.

“The OPP will lead the Integrated Security Unit and is committed to making the 2015 Games the most accessible, welcoming, friendly and safest Games yet,” said Julian Fantino, Commissioner, Ontario Provincial Police. “The Games security team has the knowledge, experience and personnel to take charge and succeed should we play host in 2015.”

The integrated security plan for 2015 includes:

* State-of-the-art security and monitoring technology to protect Games venues, participants and spectators.

* Approximately 1,000 highly-trained professional police and law enforcement personnel deployed to Games-related assignments on peak days during the 2015 Games.

* A full daily security contingent including 1,500 private security personnel and 2,000 security volunteers.
