Toronto 2015 Congratulates The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon
TORONTO, ONTARIO, October 1, 2009 – Toronto 2015 Pan / Parapan American Games Bid congratulates the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon for its most successful event yet. An exemplary model of excellent organization, volunteerism and community strength, this marathon attracts runners from not only Toronto and Canada, but also, from more than forty countries.
“The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is a fantastic event that requires serious organization, team work and hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers to be successful,” said the Hon. David Peterson, Chair, Toronto 2015 Bid Committee. “This year’s marathon was a great accomplishment and a perfect example of a major athletic event organized and supported in the city of Toronto.”
The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is the city’s premier running event and is an IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) Silver Label Race, a designation given to races that meet major criteria over a three-year period, media and international TV coverage and doping standards. Marking its 20th anniversary, the Waterfront Marathon is the city’s premier running event and one of the oldest in Toronto. This year’s event involved thousands of volunteers, hosted 20,000 runners in the marathon, half-marathon and five-kilometre races and featured Canadian record-breaking performances in both the men’s and women’s races. It also raised $1.8 million for 99 neighbourhood charities, the highest amount in its history.
