Toronto 2015 Welcomes The Support Of The Canadian Paralympic Committee

Toronto, Ontario, October 1, 2009 – The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) supports Toronto 2015 and believes the city will host the best Parapan Am Games yet. Feeling optimistic about the Bid, the CPC is excited at the prospect of working with Toronto 2015 and the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) to deliver on the Bid’s vision of hosting an exceptional athletic event.

“Canada has a strong tradition of leadership when it comes to parasport,” said Carla Qualtrough, President of CPC. “Having the Pan / Parapan Am Games in Toronto presents an opportunity to build on that leadership and ensure that all participating athletes have access to training opportunities that will prepare them to be the best in the world.”

Long-term athlete development is one of the legacy benefits of the Games, with the new Games venues used as new competition and training facilities for athletes here at home. As well, venues will be used by the community and people of all ages and abilities.

“Our vision is to stage the best-ever Games for all athletes and also, to create lasting value for the community that will live beyond the Games and well into the future,” said Jagoda Pike, President and COO, Toronto 2015.

“Canada’s parapan athletes are some of the most talented athletes in the world,” said Debbie Low, Director of High Performance, CPC. “Hosting an excellent Parapan Am Games in Toronto will provide our athletes with a tremendous experience that will not only prepare them well for the Paralympics in 2016, but set a new standard for Games to come.”

The Pan / Parapan Am Games is a major international multi-sport event, held every four years for athletes of the 42 PASO member nations. The Pan / Parapan American Games consists of all Summer Olympic sports, plus other events selected by the Pan American Sports Organization, and serve as an Olympic-qualifier for a number of the participating sports. The last edition of the Games was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July 2007 and the next will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico in October 2011.
