Canada beats Puerto Rico 7-4, will face United States for gold
AJAX, Ont. — The Canadian women's softball team will play for gold at the Pan American Games after defeating Puerto Rico 7-4 on Saturday.
Canada will face the United States on Sunday in the final.
Catcher Kaleigh Rafter and third baseman Megan Timpf led Canada's offence with two hits and two runs batted in apiece.
Starter Jenna Caira pitched 4 2/3 innings for Canada, allowing five hits and four runs to go along with eight strikeouts. Sara Groenewegen came on in relief and shut down the Puerto Rican offence with the game on the line, striking out six while allowing two hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Puerto Rico jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Canada responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams added two runs each in the fourth inning before the Canadians added to their lead with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth.
