Canada's Wang earns table tennis bronze while Brazil dominates at Pan Am Games

TORONTO — Ottawa's Eugene Wang settled for a bronze medal when he lost his semifinal 4-3 to Brazil's Hugo Calderano Saturday in men's singles table tennis action at the Pan American Games.

Trailing 3-1, Wang forced a seventh game by putting together back-to-back 11-7 wins. But Calderano moved on to the final when he beat Wang 11-7 in the deciding game.

"I am frustrated with the result," Wang said. "But a medal is a medal."

Calderano won the gold medal, defeating Gustavo Tsuboi 4-3 in an all-Brazilian final. Tsuboi advanced with a 4-3 win over another Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro, who claimed the other bronze medal.

"They are very strong and they are the biggest favourite going into this competition," Wang said of the Brazilians.

In women's action, Yue Wu of the United States beat Brazil's Lin Gui in the gold-medal final. Lily Zhang of the U.S. and Brazil's Caroline Kumahara won the bronze medals.
