Canada's Zupancic wins judo gold at Pan Am Games, Tremblay adds silver
TORONTO — Kelita Zupancic of Whitby, Ont., won Canada's first gold medal of the 2015 Pan American Games with a victory in the women's under-70-kilogram event on Monday.
Zupancic defeated Onix Cortes of Cuba by Ippon in the final to claim the gold.
Maria Portela of Brazil and Yuri Alevar of Colombia won bronze medals.
Zupancic began Monday's competition with a quarter-final win over Ecuador's Vanessa Chala before defeating Portela in the semis.
"It feels surreal," she said. "Words can't describe it. I'm so proud to be Canadian. I'm proud to represent my family, friends, coaches, teammates, everyone."
Also Monday, Stefanie Tremblay took silver in the women's under-63-kilogram event, losing to Ecuador's Estefania Garcia in the final.
Whitby's Zachary Burt had a chance for a medal but lost to Colombia's Pedro Castro in a bronze-medal match.
