Canadian rugby women to go for gold against U.S. at Pan American Games

TORONTO — The Canadian women will play for gold Sunday in rugby sevens at the Pan American Games.

Canada secured its place in the gold medal match against the U.S. when it thumped Argentina 45-0 to open play Sunday. The Americans also improved to 4-0-0, hammering Mexico 71-0.

Canada and the U.S. were due to meet in a meaningless pool match prior to the championship game later in the day.

The Canadian women won their first four pool matches, outscoring the opposition 196-0 while running in 32 tries.

The Canadian men's first match Sunday was a quarter-final against Chile. The men started well Saturday, winning their first two games before stumbling 21-7 in the day's finale against Argentina.

The U.S. Eagles are the top-ranked side in the eight-team men's competition, finishing sixth in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series this season, ahead of No. 8 Argentina, No. 9 Canada and No. 16 Brazil.

Canada is the top-ranked team in the six-team women's competition, finishing second in the Women's Seven Series this season. The Americans were fifth and Brazil eighth.
