Colombia dominates weightlifting, wins five medals at Pan Am Games

TORONTO — Colombia dominated the first day of weightlifting competition at the Pan American Games on Saturday, winning five medals.

Habib de las Salas de la Rosa started Colombia's medal haul with a gold medal in the 56-kilogram competition.

De las Salas de la Rosa's score of 269 was four points better than teammate Carlos Berna Gonzalez, who earned silver.

Luis Garcia Brito of the Dominican Republic earned bronze with as score of 256.

In the men's 62-kg Colombia's Oscar Figueroa Mosquera won gold with a score of 310, two points off his Pan Am record score of 312 set in 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Francisco Mosquera Valencia made it another 1-2 finish for Colombia, winning silver with a score of 305. Venezuela's Jesus Lopez Sanchez was third at 283.

In the women's 48-kg, Candida Vasquez Hernandez of the Dominican Republic took gold with a Pan Am Games record score of 181. Colombia's Ana Segura won silver with 180 while Beatriz Piron Candelario of the Dominican Republic won bronze with 175.

Amanda Braddock of Brampton, Ont., was ninth at 155.
