United States beats Canada 9-8 in men's water polo semifinal at Pan Am Games

MARKHAM, Ont. — Canada dropped a 9-8 decision to the United States in a thrilling men's water polo semifinal Monday night at the Pan Am Games.

John Conway scored on a penalty throw with 46 seconds left to make it a one-goal game.

Canada regained possession with 18 seconds left but couldn't get the ball past American goalkeeper Merrill Moses.

With the win, the Americans move much closer to locking up an Olympic berth.

They will book their ticket to Rio by winning Pan Am gold or if Brazil beats Argentina in the late semifinal at the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre.

Canada will still have an opportunity to qualify at tournaments later this year and in early 2016.
