The XVII Pan American Games took place from July 10 to 26, 2015, with Toronto as host city and competitions spread across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Athletes from the 41 member nations of the Pan American sports movement competed in dozens of sports, many of them as qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
A regional Games
Rather than concentrating everything in one city, Toronto 2015 used venues across the region: aquatics and fencing in Scarborough, athletics at York University, cycling in Milton, football in Hamilton, canoe and rowing in Welland, and badminton and table tennis in Markham, among others. The athletes’ village was built in Toronto’s West Don Lands and later became housing and a university residence.
Ceremonies and mascot
The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the downtown stadium normally known as the Rogers Centre. The opening ceremony was produced by Cirque du Soleil. The Games mascot was Pachi, a colourful porcupine whose quills represented the participating nations.
Results
