Following Pan American tradition, the flame for Toronto 2015 was lit in Mexico before travelling to Canada. A torch relay then carried it through communities across Ontario in the weeks before the opening ceremony.
A relay for every community
The route included large cities, small towns and First Nations communities, with local celebrations at many stops. Thousands of torchbearers, chosen through nominations and community programmes, carried the flame through each community.
The final leg
The relay ended in Toronto at the opening ceremony, where the cauldron was lit to mark the start of the Games.
