The 2015 Parapan American Games

The Parapan American Games followed from August 7 to 15, 2015. Para athletes from across the Americas competed in sports such as para swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, goalball, boccia and para cycling, many of them seeking qualification for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Shared venues

The Parapan Am Games used many of the same venues as the Pan Am Games, which meant designing facilities that were accessible from the start. That approach is part of their lasting legacy: the aquatics centre in Scarborough and the athletics stadium at York University continue to serve para athletes and clubs.

Why they mattered

Holding both Games in the same summer gave para sport unusual visibility in Canada, with broadcast coverage and full venues for several events. Many local clubs report that the Games helped introduce new athletes to para sport.
